At a Glance
The origin of the word ‘Jive’ is unknown. May be it refers to ‘jive talk’ or ‘badmouthing’. It is a very loud and energetic dance form. At first the African American slaves used to dance many native dances with the music which was similar to jive rhythm. Now we get Jive into two parts- one is based on African beats and the other based upon its evolved style.
‘Jive’ is known by many different names. It is sometimes called Swing, the Jitterbug, Lindy hop or the Charleston, although it is a completely different dance. These dances are all similar, and their steps are interconnected.
Jive is most directly related to Swing. Jive's music eventually developed its own flavor in the 1950's and 60's. It contains bouncy rhythms and easy melodies. It is a dance of high energy and one of the hardest dances to perform.
